Baking Bliss is a fictional cookbook that I designed. One of my favorite types of books to thumb through are cookbooks as I love looking at the beautiful images and love reading the recipes. I often like looking at the different layouts and how they flow throughout the design, making mental notes in my head as to why something works beautifully and why sometimes something does not. Of course, one of the things that I often pay attention to is the type selection. Does it add to the design or does it fall flat?
When designing this cookbook, I was inspired by the imagery and from that, I drew my design. Most of the images have a subtle wash to them with blue undertones and some pastels and it was from that that I drew inspiration for my cover design.
For the typography selection, they body text was made up of Sentinel serif type to make the whole cookbook look classy. To give the right contrast, Brandon Grotesque (sans serif) was selected for the title and the various subtitles.
The layout was made up of a 12 column grid system that allowed me to accommodate all of the text in clean and readable fashion. This also allowed for images to be placed correctly as chapter openers, images for recipes or even as full spreads.
