The History of Mexico through its Gastronomy
SERVICES: EDITORIAL DESIGN
A final requirement for the successful completion and master’s degree eligibility was to design a book of our own on the topic of our choice. We were to take everything we had learned in the prior ten modules and successfully apply it to a book design with a minimum of 200 pages. Though not a requirement, we were encouraged to have our book printed so as to know how to properly send files to print with registration marks, trim lines along with a high-res PDF sent as pages, not spreads.
I chose to do mine on an abbreviated version of the history of Mexico through its gastronomy. Chapters were divided into regions (six) with an illustration of where each region was located within Mexico. From there, a summary of typical foods and how they came into existence based on its history was summarized for each state within said region. With a total of 332 pages, this book included iconography, images, and hand drawn illustrations to break up what might be considered the monotony of text heavy material. Typical drinks and recipes were also included.
This project qualified as a semi–finalist in the 7th annual edition of the TFM ESDESIGN Awards in the spring of 2023. This competition is for graduates of the master’s program where the top graphic design students are selected to compete for the best final graduate project. It was an absolute honor to be included and recognized.
