“Find Your Greatness”
Inspirational Stories about Everyday Greatness
SERVICES: EDITORIAL DESIGN, ART DIRECTION
With every editorial project, the ability to art direct is as important as laying out the work itself. Selecting images that will connect with the reader and work with the copy is a harmonious dance of design. In this fictious project, the topic of my choice was talking about greatness. But not greatness as we know it or as it is defined; greatness as it is found within ordinary people doing extraordinary things, not seeking glory or applause but simply looking to contribute to society.
Since I was given a minimum page count, from there I was able to determine an approximation of “stories” I wanted to cover. I began searching topics on every day heros and from there began my image search. The topic that was widely covered were of the healthcare workers in Mexico, specifically Mexico City, during the COVID pandemic in 2020; their long hours and sacrifice and their need to just do, without any recognition or applause. The second topic that was most covered were of the volunteers and rescue workers in the aftermath of the earthquake that violently shook Mexico City on September 19, 2017, a shocking 32 years later on the same exact day of the deadly earthquake of ’85.
Other design decision included the use of pull quotes and font selection. The main font for titles and headers was Gotham and the body text font used was Baskerville.
None of the images are mine. They are borrowed from outside sources and were used for informational purposes only as a requirement for class.
